The house is finally quiet tonight. I am settled into my favorite recliner, the screen softly glowing as I play through the final chapters of a story-driven video game. There is a moment in the story where the main character, who has been surviving entirely on their own, realizes they absolutely need someone else to help them cross a broken bridge. No matter how strong they are, they just cannot make the jump alone.
Watching that scene play out, it hit me hard. I paused the game and just sat there in the quiet. It reminded me so much of my own journey as an artist who uses a camera to help create my art.
For a long time, I thought the creative process had to be a solitary grind. I thought bringing my vision forward meant working in total isolation, figuring out every piece of the puzzle by myself. But you don’t know what you don’t know.
The truth is, life lessons and artistic growth are completely inseparable. You cannot force growth in a vacuum. Sometimes, to find the right path, you have to let go of the old ones. Clearing out old spaces—even closing doors on communities you have held onto for years—can feel incredibly daunting. But making that space is exactly what allows you to meet the right people.
When you finally connect with like-minded creatives who truly speak your language, everything shifts. You find mentors who challenge your boundaries and push you to see beyond the technical details. You find friends who understand the quiet struggle of wrestling with an artistic block. They become the bridge when you cannot make the jump alone.
This is why we have to maintain a student mindset. The moment we think we have nothing left to learn from the people around us is the moment our art stops growing. Community is not just about networking or sharing your work; it is about sharing the heavy lifting.
Make art that deeply engages your soul, even if you are the only one who ever sees it. That personal fulfillment is the foundation of everything we do. But please, do not walk the road entirely alone.
Reach out to the people who inspire you. Support your fellow creators fiercely, share what you have learned, and let them help you navigate the tricky spots. We are all just trying to figure this out together, and honestly, that shared connection is what makes the journey so beautifully worth it.
